Why RDR3 Could Take Place In Canada With Charles Smith

One of the more interesting directions that Red Dead Redemption 3 could take for its setting is following Charles Smith to Canada. After the events of the first and second games there is a wide variety of potential protagonists who could have their stories followed up on. Charles would not only be a unique protagonist but Canada could make a great RDR3 setting.

The Red Dead Redemption series has already shown that it doesn't have any particular rules when it comes to making sequels. Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place years before the original fleshing out the past of the Van Der Linde gang and showing how John ended up in his situation from the first game. As a result there are multiple story lines that could be followed up on in RDR3 such as focusing Red Dead Redemption 3 on Jack Marston in the wake of his father's death. Out of all these options though Charles' may be the most interesting.

Charles Has A Strong Story For Red Dead Redemption 3's Setting

Charles was one of the members of the Van Der Linde gang who managed to survive until the end of the game although following Dutch's descent into villainy in RDR2 he lost faith in his formerly respected leader. He was a loyal friend to Arthur Morgan and had a well-earned reputation as the strongest member of the gang  as well as their best hunter. Even though he only joined a few months before the events of RDR2  he had the respect of everyone aside from the nasty natured Micah.

By the end of Red Dead Redemption 2 Charles is intent on leaving the outlaw life behind  just as John had tried to do. Due to the series  history of its protagonists dying  this could paint an unfortunate forecast for Charles if he becomes RDR3's protagonist. However leaving the violent setting of the first two games could lead to a different fate waiting for him if Red Dead Redemption 3's setting is Canada.

Canada Has Yet To Be Explored In The Red Dead Universe

The first two Red Dead Redemption games have largely taken place in the same region. There have been a few differences  such as Red Dead Redemption 2's pointless Guarma detour  but it has maintained the general wild west setting. For the third game in the series  a new locale could be a refreshing change. With Charles setting a course for Canada at the end of RDR2's epilogue  that could be the path for the next game to follow.

A Canada setting for RDR3 could provide a more harsh environment than the previous two games  especially if RDR3 takes place in the dead of winter. Not only would it provide a new challenge in that sense  but the change of locale would also bring a host of new flora and fauna for the player to encounter. One of Red Dead Redemption 2's strongest points was the incredible amount of detail paid to the natural world that Arthur interacted with via hunting and foraging. After that impressive display Rockstar's team could certainly recreate early 1900s Canada with the same loving attention to detail.
