The variations between love and disappointment mark the exciting and dancing R&B of the singer and composer Vedo . About to release his sixth album Mood Swings on January 13 of that year he revealed the single Do You Mind in partnership with Chris Brown.
In addition to repeating the partnership with Chris Brown (Warm Embrace” Heartbreak on a Full Moon and Indigo) he signs hits for Usher (“Don't Waste My Time ft. Ella Mai) and even tracks from K-Pop to iconic groups like EXO ( Going Crazy”) and NCT 127 (Regular). Recently Vedo was nominated for a Grammy for another collaboration with Brown – Warm Embrace from the album Breezy.
From garnering attention alongside Usher on The Voice to the present day, when he went viral alongside his mentor on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert, Vedo has established himself as a prolific songwriter with hundreds of millions of streams amassing his tracks. and today it has 2.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone, with São Paulo as the third city where its music is most consumed in the world.
With a musicality that touches the feelings of disappointment and love, his album Mood Swings showed the result of his persistence mainly due to the partnership with Chris Brown. How did the story of this album happen and how is it to see it finally finished?
It's definitely an album that stands out from everything I've done. I feel that you can notice a maturity and an evolution in each album, but this one is different. This album was like therapy like a way to vent things that I've never talked about openly in a song and I'm happy people are connecting so much.
The song in question that reunited him with Chris was Do You Mind which with just 1 month of release took more than 567 thousand people to listen to it on YouTube. What is the meaning of this release in his career and what were the paths that led him to this single? For a long time you had already tried for this partnership however Brown always said that it would not be the right time. Today with the song already released would you agree with Chris Brown about this being the right moment and not his latest attempts? What made January 13th the right time for this release?
I had been pestering him for a long time to make this song which I always believed. It's an accomplishment and a milestone for me that we released it. I was very anxious with her insistence that it wasn't time. I agree too much now. Many artists make songs with other much more famous artists and remain in the shadow of that participation. And I feel like it took some time for me to consolidate my name a little bit, for people to recognize that Vedo exists and that it wasn't just a Chris Brown song. I respect his posture a lot today because he could have just accepted it earlier for me to stop disturbing him. (laughter)
Besides Do You Mind you already had other singles together such as Warm Embrace Heartbreak on a Full Moon and Indigo. In that case how was the beginning of the partnership between you and how does this artistic exchange usually happen between you two, who are already renowned names in the music scene? In relation to the other songs that you have already released what is the differential that this new release could be contrasting with the others?
He's an inspiration within the R&B scene and it's really gratifying to have him and other guys that inspired me like Usher as partners. Every time we collaborated there was that feeling of a bigger artist leading a smaller one. In that one I had the feeling that we were side by side and that even motivates me to keep doing new and different things.
In addition to the partnership with Chris Brown another great singer who has worked with you is Usher where you signed Don't Waste My Time ft. Ella Mai and even K-pop hits like EXO's Going Crazy. Both artists have different styles and even K-pop, which originated in South Korea, has become a fever in the world. From all the experience you gathered in your career how is it to be having this multicultural contact in your daily life?
I feel that kpop culture is an amazing thing. I am always impressed. It's like R&B and hip hop on steroids. Whenever I work with K-pop I feel like it's hard for me to go back and write something more simple. Just to give you an idea, I needed to make a vocal arrangement for nine voices. It changed my way of thinking a lot and it seems to have unlocked a skill in my mind you know?
Another major event that stood out on his journey was the Grammy nomination for the track Warm Embrace also a partnership with Brown and which was for his album Breezy. How was the moment when you received this nomination and what is it like to carry this honor within your life both professionally and from a personal experience?
It was something that surprised me. This song I wrote a few years ago and I thought the song was amazing. Time passed and I continued to think the song was great, it was when I offered it to Chris Brown who raised the song to that Grammy level. It is something I will always be grateful for.
In addition to working as a singer you also have experience with songwriting accumulating hundreds of millions of streams on your tracks where on Spotify alone you already have 2.6 million monthly listeners. In your opinion what is the essential element that cannot be missing in good music?
It's the way to include yourself in the music. You can listen to the music and get your story in there. I once heard someone say that if you're not a drug dealer you're not going to relate to a song about drugs. Human relationships heartbreaks and disappointments are part of everyone's life. It's a universal experience and connects us deeply. I feel like that's what makes people relate to my songs.
