Chlöe Bailey one half of the dynamic sibling R&B duo Chlöe x Halle set social media ablaze after the announcement of her new single How Does It Feel featuring Chris Brown. This is ahead of the release of the debut of her much anticipated solo album In Pieces.Following the announcement of the singl Chlöe faced backlash for her collaboration choice.
In the years since Chris Browns first single Run It hit the mainstream in 2005 catapulting him to maintain mainstream success for the last 15 years or so Chris’s personal life and his past controversial and abusive behaviour have been at the forefront of his career.
Many accounts of his abusive behaviour have been made public including the infamous 2009 domestic violence case opened against him by his then girlfriend Rihanna. There's also the documented harassment of his former girlfriend and model Karrueche Tran which saw a courtissued five year restraining order against Chris which granted to her in 2017.
Chris responded to the controversy in a series of heated Instagram stories questioning where the outrage is for white artists with abuse allegations against them.
He shared an article detailing abuse allegations against celebrities like Sean Penn Mel Gibson and Emma Roberts interestingly leaving out his own ranking in said article.
Chlöe isn’t the only woman in the industry to get criticised for working with Chris.
Former Fifth Harmony group member and singer Normani sparked debates in 2022 when she was featured in Chris Brown’s music video for his single WE Warm Embrace. Many fans took to social media to express their disappointment in Normani and criticise her decision to work with the controversial artist.
Throughout his career Chris Brown has maintained a huge audience with more 160 million followers across Instagram and Twitter. He has also collaborated with many big name artists and continues to gain success from his solo music and collaborations.
Some musicians he has collaborated with include Justin Bieber Drake DJ Khaled Usher David Guetta and Tyga among many others with little documented criticisms against them.
So it begs the questio what prompts this selective outrage and do female artists get more backlash.
What makes this question a difficult one to answer is that Chris Brown has had collaborations with other female musicians who have not received any or the same level of backlash against them as Chlöe and Normani did.
These include multi-award winning singer and songwriter H.E.R Ella Ma Nicki Minaj Jhené Aiko and Summer Walker to name a few.
