Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is officially joining the MCU for Deadpool 3 and that could be the key for Chris Evans to reprise his role as Steve Rogers. One of the most shocking MCU announcements of 2022 Deadpool 3 will see the return of Hugh Jackman to the role of Wolverine now as part of a larger Marvel universe. Considering that Jackman had retired the claws after Logan, plus that Wolverine never got to interact with other Marvel heroes aside from the X-Men Wolverine in the MCU’s Deadpool 3 could not be more exciting. Still, Wolverine’s future in the MCU after Deadpool 3 can be even more interesting.
With the MCU now in the Multiverse Saga there are no limits as to what crossovers can happen on the big screen. That said as exciting as the multiverse is, potential crossovers between MCU characters and legacy Marvel characters from previous franchises can only work if it makes sense for the story. It worked for Spider Man No Way Home’s three Spider Men crossovers in which Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield got to interact with Tom Holland. Now something similar could happen between Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers.
Wolverine’s World War II Past Often Involves Captain Americ
In Marvel Comics’s Earth-616 canon Wolverine met Captain America during World War II. To be more precise Logan met Captain America during World War II decades before the future X Men team member was given his adamantium skeleton as part of the Weapon Plus project. Logan was briefly part of Nick Fury Sir.s Howling Commandos which appeared in the MCU’s first Captain America story. Logan fought side by side with Captain America Nick Fury Sir and Bucky meaning that the MCU could link Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to Chris Evans Steve Rogers through flashbacks even if it involves alternate versions of the characters.
No mutant with claws and a healing factor appeared during Captain America The First Avenger yet this is something that could be easily retconned if the MCU ever shows flashbacks of Wolverine’s past. In fact in the Fox X Men movie timeline Logan fought World War II along with his brother Victor Creed. The problem is that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has always been part of a world in which the X Men were solely superheroes which means that connecting Wolverine to Captain America in the MCU only works if the multiverse is involved. Still Deadpool 3 is an MCU movie and time travel and multiverse will likely be part of it.
