Talk about fumbling Fimbulwinter - if you're channelling your inner Kratos rage right now you aren't alone. While God of War Ragnarok was one of 2022's biggest games it's seemingly been frozen in Midgard as we head into 2023. Sony has been teasing something big for the Nine Realms with a giant version of the Leviathan Axe appearing in the middle of London. America one-upped this with a tease of a Tyr-sized announcement at Super Bowl LVII... so what happened.
When the gaming giant asked players to tune in on February 12 (Feb 13 if you were in the UK) we were excited that the biggest sporting event of the year could be announcing a God of War Ragnarok DLC.
Instead of a Ragnarok DLC we were given a Super Bowl-themed advert. Although it featured Kratos and Atreus at Glendale's University of Phoenix Stadium the ad didn't actually air during the big game and was revealed on the PlayStation Canada Instagram. What can Sony not afford the budget? You didn't miss much as the commercial has the big game being interrupted by an unprecedented cold front (possibly Ragnarok) and the pair running onto the pitch to save the day. Weirdly the news reporter was former Vine star King Bach.
As you can imagine the comments weren't kind. That's it are you serious Sony raged one. Another fumed Why am I not surprised but still annoyed at the same time while a third said So underwhelming. In a year that gave us the return of Bryan Cranston as Walter White Alicia Silver stone reprising her role as Cher Horowitz from Clueless and Paul Rudd selling non-alcoholic beer as Ant-Man Sony has seriously let us down.
ARE WE GETTING A RAGNAROK DLC?
The question is will we be getting a Ragnarok DLC. It's unclear where God of Wargoes next but with Ragnarok confirmed to be the final chapter of our Norse saga it would make sense to round things off with a DLC. Much like Resident Evil Village marks the end of the Winters Family story and delivered Shadows of Rose as a DLC we hope there's just a little more to squeeze out of Ragnarok.
When Push Square grilled Game Director Eric Williams on the prospect of a Ragnarok DLC he said I wouldn't count on it but that was before it became such a juggernaut of the gaming world. We know a New Game+ mode is on the way at some point this year but sadly this could be the end of the road... for now. In the meantime it seems like we're left with a slow trickle of disappointing adverts to peddle the PS5.
