The Witcher season 2 revealed that Ciri's father is Emhyr the Emperor of Nilfgaard which may indicate that he planned Geralt's Law of Surprise twist. His character was introduced in The Witcher season 1 as Duny a cursed man who had fallen in love with Pavetta. The Witcherbook series outlines how this character had heard a prophecy that set him on his path back to the Nilfgaard throne and on a chase after his daughter but with so many changes between the source matter and the Netflix series much of his story is still a mystery.
In The Witcher books series Emhyr didn't learn of Ithlinne's prophecy until after marrying Pavetta. It led him to believe that having a child with Ciri would set him on his destiny so he shifted his plans. However, the early reveal of Duny's true identity in the Witcher TV series implies that the dethroned air of Nilfgaard had been on his path for far longer. Perhaps Emhyr heard the prophecy long before which is why he married Pavetta to begin with since she had Elder Blood and knew that their child would be the one the prophecy spoke of. If this were true what else did Emhyr manipulate?
Duny (Emhyr) May Have Manipulated Geralt Into Claiming The Law Of Surprise
In The Witcher season 1, Geralt saved Duny who insisted that the witcher name his price for the life debt. Geralt had said they were free and clear but Duny was adamant about paying a fee. So his savior named the first thing that came to his mind - the Law of Surprise. Of course only a few moments after this everyone realized Ciri's mother Pavetta was pregnant. Duny looked just as shocked as the rest of them at this news but the later reveal of his true identity and plans delivers questions about if he really knew what he was doing.
Given all the discussion about the Law of Surprise leading up to Geralt's pivotal moment it's no surprise that it would be the first thing he thought to say. If Duny had already suspected that Pavetta was pregnant, he might have intended for Geralt to end up connected to his unborn child. He ensured fate worked in his favor by pushing the matter despite the witcher's protests.
Of course if it were true that Duny already suspected that his wife was pregnant then it could be that the Law of Surprise wouldn't have applied to Ciri since the law claims that which someone has that they do not yet know. Additionally this manipulation on Duny's part would depend on several other factors going exactly his way such as Geralt being at the feast to begin with. Still these details are relatively small and the fantasy series could potentially get away with it if this were the direction it intended to go.
