The Witcher VFX Producer Teases The Lore In Season 3 & Beyond

The Witcher season 3 is currently in production, and the show’s VFX producer has teased an expansion of the world’s lore for the season’s final episodes. Netflix’s The Witcher is based on the book series of the same name by Andrzej Sapkowski  which also inspired the hit video game series developed by CD Projekt Red. Notably  The Witcher season 3 is also the last time viewers will see Henry Cavill as the protagonist Geralt, as the actor is set to be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in the show’s fourth season.

While Netflix’s The Witcher has often been praised for the many ways in which it honors and faithfully adapts aspects of its source material the show  lso has the opportunity to expand on the lore in interesting ways. While some have said the show’s second season tried too hard to set up The  Witcher spin-offs, the series has taken strides to create its own space as a faithful but unique  take on Andrze Sapkowski’s novels. The Witcher VFX producer Graeme Marshall spoke on the subject – and teased more uniq e things.

I feel like this is where they're separate from the video game or separate from the books is kind of allowing them to explore other storylines and other places and things like that. I think that's working well for them so far. It's different from watching a show like The Last of Us, in which the first episode is the beginning of the video game. Whereas with this, I think there's a lot of creative license to stay similar and true to certain parts and enable them to explore different parts as well.

As far as season 4 is concerned, we haven't really gotten too heavily involved just yet. But with season 3, we're in the throes of delivering the final couple of episodes on that, and it's super cool. I don't think it's anything that anyone's read or seen before in Witcher lore so I think it's gonna be exciting

How Far Could The Witcher Skew Away From Its Known Lore

The Witcher has largely struck a careful balance between adapting and expanding on its source material but as ambitions rise The Witcher television universe could certainly continue to become its own unique offering. The Witcher Blood Origin was an example of Netflix’s The Witcher universe creating its own material without relying directly on Sapkowski’s books. While that show was not particularly well-received overall it does point to a desire for continued lore expansion that according to Marshall will continue in some way in The Witcher season 3.

How the continued expansion of The Witcher lore will be received is another question entirely. As Marshall mentioned  HBO’s The Last of Us is currently being lauded for both the ways it is directly adapting the original game  and the ways in which it takes bold new steps with the story  as showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have often stated  their work has been to choose very judiciously when to stray from the source material  and when to adapt it as closely as possible. Taking bold strides in new directions has thus far seemed rather controversial for The Witcher  but perhaps that will change in season 3.
